Sonny Speaks!

Here’s Sonny Rollins looking back on his life and brilliant career.

A true music legend still with us, still going strong.

I’ve been very fortunate to have seen Sonny in concert.

The last live performance that I saw was on the outdoor stage in Lincoln Center during a summer jazz festival in 2000.

It was a beautiful day and I’ll never forget the image of the sun setting in the background while Sonny was blowing his horn on stage.

Awesome!!!!!

  1. Great video. There’s something about Sony Rollins’ sincerity in his quest that has always struck me as incredibly human and genuine, and of course that has always come through in his sound. After watching this I went on put on “The Bridge,” and thought of him walking away from jazz (and fame) in ’59 in order to arrive at a sound he was proud of, and practicing alone on the Williamsburg Bridge every night. If that’s not a classic scene out of the history of human soul I don’t know what is. One of the all time greats.

A friend recently gave me a copy of an old New Yorker with a great article on Sonny Rollins. Here’s a link.
