The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta will hold a hearing on December 9th to determine whether Troy Davis can continue to appeal his death sentence or whether the execution should go forward. Davis has already come close to execution several times. His family and supporters world wide are all hoping that the court will grant him the opportunity to prove his innocence.
Troy Davis was sentenced to death for the murder of Police Officer Mark MacPhail in Savannah, Georgia. According to Amnesty International, the case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony that contained inconsistencies, even at trial. Since then, all but two of the state’s nine non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted or contradicted their testimony. Many of these witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured or coerced into testifying or signing statements.
